Used Car Purchase Checklist
Follow our 5-step checklist to buy a used car safely. Expert advice and essential checks.

Buying a used vehicle is an excellent opportunity to get a great deal, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare if certain essential checks are neglected.
At RG Automotive, we have assisted many buyers and developed a simple, practical and effective 5-step checklist to secure every purchase. This method will allow you to avoid unpleasant surprises and buy your vehicle with complete peace of mind.
Step 1: Prepare well before the visit
- Research known weaknesses of the target model: timing belt, water pump, automatic gearbox fluid change, frequent electronic issues.
- Budget for potential repair costs: timing belt and water pump replacement between CHF 1'200 to CHF 1'800.
- Set a maximum overall budget: account for purchase price, potential repairs, administrative and registration fees.
- Compare market prices: use AutoScout24, Car For You, Ricardo for a realistic view of prices based on year and mileage.
Step 2: Visual inspection of the vehicle
The first visual impression already provides valuable indications about vehicle maintenance:
- Bodywork: check for uniform color, dents, scratches, hail damage, cracks and possible rust on the lower body and wheel arches.
- Tires: legal minimum tread depth 1.6 mm; recommended: summer ≥ 3 mm, winter ≥ 4 mm. Replacement between CHF 400 and CHF 900.
- CV boots and joints: dry, flexible and without oil leaks.
- Sensitive exterior elements: windshield without impact, headlights and optics without cracks or condensation, mirrors intact.
Tip: always inspect the vehicle in daylight and in dry weather.
Step 3: Brake inspection
An essential safety check before any purchase:
- Discs: smooth surface, without grooves or marked edges.
- Pads: minimum thickness of 3 to 4 mm.
- Replacement budget: discs and pads on one axle: CHF 400 to CHF 900 depending on the model.
- Maintenance history: request invoices for recent brake work.
Step 4: Maintenance verification
The service book is a key indicator of the care given to the vehicle:
- Demand the service book and invoices: verify the regularity of services.
- Key points to check: timing belt (80'000 to 120'000 km), water pump (often changed with the belt), automatic gearbox fluid change (60'000 to 100'000 km), brakes, shock absorbers, battery, air conditioning system.
RG Automotive advice: complete maintenance and detailed invoices are signs of seriousness.
Step 5: Test drive and negotiation
The test drive is a crucial step. Prefer a 15 to 30 minute drive including different types of roads:
- Absence of abnormal noises (knocking, squeaking, vibrations).
- Smooth gearbox operation without jerking or hesitation.
- Steering stability (no pulling to the left or right).
- Precise braking without vibration or extraneous noise.
- Correct wheel and bodywork alignment.
Complete air conditioning test:
- Check that the AC immediately produces cold air.
- Control temperature regulation and air flow.
- Also test the heating.
Why is air conditioning crucial?
The air conditioning system involves several expensive components (compressor, condenser, electronics). A breakdown can quickly generate costs between CHF 500 and CHF 1'500 or more depending on necessary repairs. Furthermore, a faulty AC can reveal poor general vehicle maintenance.
Negotiation:
After the test drive, list all defects found and estimate potential repairs. Use these elements to adjust your price offer. A serious seller will always accept transparent discussion based on concrete facts.
With this RG Automotive checklist, you are perfectly equipped to buy smart and secure your automotive investment. If in doubt, do not hesitate to call a professional for a thorough diagnosis before signing.
